“Jakub Hosek creates his paintings in a very interesting method, applying acrylic paint onto the canvas using disposable cardboard templates. It results in technically complex, accurately created paintings that are remarkable, and not only at the first sight. It is characteristic of Jakub Hosek to encipher texts into his paintings in a very sophisticated manner. The texts are mostly titles of his favourite bands’ songs, quotations from literature and films, or names of his idols. The text in the painting does not necessarily correspond to the painted symbols, or motifs on the canvas, so the viewer is often entirely confused. There is no room for logic in Hosek’s paintings. His specific technique is recognizable at first sight. His paintings are also united by continuously repeated motifs, such as leaves, trees, daggers, knives and swords, bones, blood, towers, mountains and tufts of hair. At present time, his paintings are shifting more to the abstract and 3D levels, where Hosek’s specifically mastered calligraphy gets more latitude for experimenting. His most recent objects, made of wood, are becoming a so-called painting in space; they are carved in a very intricate way. In combination with a delicate drawing on the walls and his paintings, they move Hosek’s artwork closer to being a vehicle of setting up.

For Jakub Hosek, script and text are important binding elements in his (not only painter’s) work. He is a great connoisseur of music; therefore it is only natural that he is one of the founding members of the A.M. 180 collective, a non-profit DIY group. Hosek organizes concerts and runs his own AM180 off-space in Prague, creates designs for concerts and other cultural activities, where he uses script in a very original way. During those years that Hasek dedicated to art, he created a specific fund that determines a hallmark as well as a form for all those unmistakable posters that are so closely connected with his work, although not so very well recognized or appreciated by viewers.
