“It is exactly that absurd humour that helps me to overcome the sadness that I perceive from this world. I am interested in ideals, utopias, pride, romanticism, in the real and pure sense of word, and finally in humour that so few people really understand. The most important part of my paintings is the theme. But also colour, that I became interested in when I was inspired by the subject of commercialism in sport, including advertising.” (-JV-)
“There are weird monuments, towers, or memorabilia of present day proudly erected in Vasilko’s canvases. Those pieces of ascetic architecture and hoisted skeletons are inherited from past utopias (mainly Russian constructivism); at the same time they represent new social constructions - romantic designs and individual projections of construction dreams for a better society with a radical dictatorship of art. They come to sight on grey planes as huge towering constructions, steam cured skeletons, aggressive hallucinations of “sky scrapers”. However, it is not completely clear if they represent the future monuments, or leftovers of industrial waste, piles of debris of “discarded” utopian visions. From the static tower scenes (between reconstruction and revolt), Vasilko is able to create dynamic and lively paintings, full of illusion, melancholy, desires, absurdity and dry humour.” (-zVB-)
Both J. Vasilko and P. Kralik are the founders of the so-called “Iron Party”.
