I believe that in my work I deal with topics that are important to me; I re-construct and re-create my experiences (and memories), searching for an alternative space for them. All emotions that I experience directly are concerned with actions- in some kind of a parallel world. In a certain way, it is a form of stylized “diary” entries. In my experience, the painting which is done in cooperation with some concept is capable of reflecting the life reality better.” (JB)
“Josef Bolf’s paintings do not represent exhibitionistic art-therapy that would touch viewers with its sincerity and hopelessness at the same time. Rather than that, his paintings reflect the grievousness of contemporary art, a fact that makes it so easy to identify oneself with the depressive phenomena.” “By scratching (on a wax foundation covered with ink it is possible to create not only thin lines, but also entire scratched areas), Bolf succeeded to elegantly “circumvent” the problem of relationship between drawing and painting. It is a combined technique that is equally close to both.”
“Josef Bolf’s paintings, literally lacerated, radiate poignant beauty. Their characters are difficult for us to define, even though we are intimately familiar with those plush characters with inflamed eyes that are too scared by the world around to even leave their living room; alternatively, they are spiritlessly wandering around in neighbourhoods and supermarkets.”
“Last but not least, in a recent Bolf’s series we can find the details that were precisely observed from real life. An absurd cemetery in Chodov, a mask of the approaching metro train, the empty supermarket atmosphere, or a dreary evening spent surfing the internet- they all symbolize a city alienation phenomenon, but in the metaphorical sense, they closely document contemporary life.” (zTP)
In 2005 he was nominated for Jindrich Chalupecky Award.
